  If you just see a big tree, you need to open up your eyes to life. Your a passing moment for this 350 year old work of nature. A monument shared by hundreds of many generations.
  I was a freshman at MIZZOU, just joined a frat and rode out for a road trip with 6 guys in a massive 225 convertible with a case of PBR and stopped on a hot Saturday afternoon in the shade of the big oak in 1977.
  Years later and about 5 MS 150s later, I still stop and have a memory. Some delinquent ripped off the historical marker, but I'm glad to see all the internet sites and even a brewery now that recognize the big burr oak. This is the real life Giving Tree that Shel wrote about.

  I spent a couple of hours with this large, beautiful tree on crisp clear evening. I know not everyone is a nature lover, but to stand next to a tree that is very large and old is amazing. Are there bigger and better trees in the world-sure, but this one was within a reasonable drive and a must if you travel highway 70. Just outside of Columbia MO-sadly for photographers-light pollution, but easy enough to get to. The farms and old barns were also great to see on the way back to this spot. Do something a little different and just off the beaten path, what the heck make a day trip out of it and eat some good food in Columbia too!
